Material flow
Make the movement, transformation and loss of materials visible across the value chain.
Set the boundary
Choose a product, facility or value chain and a consistent reporting period. Identify incoming materials, stocks, useful outputs and residual streams. Use compatible units so the balance can be reconciled.
Trace the pathways
Follow material through processing, use, collection and recovery. Distinguish a measured flow from an assumed destination. A transfer to a recovery contractor is not the same as evidence of a recovered material.
Prioritize the opportunity
Consider value, quality, volume and the feasibility of changing the flow. A small high-value component may deserve attention before a large low-value stream. Assign owners and information requirements to the next investigation.
